FAQs

Everything you need to know about visiting the Onyx.

Tickets, Pricing & Refunds

Tickets are available through our website, Fandango, or in person at our box office. We encourage purchasing directly through our website whenever possible. It makes it easier for us to assist you with your reservation if needed.

No. All seating at the Onyx is general admission, with just 29 seats in each screening room. Purchasing tickets in advance guarantees admission, but not a particular seat.

Theatre doors open 30 minutes before showtime. If you're saving seats for friends, someone must remain with those seats until your guests arrive. Leaving personal belongings on unattended seats does not reserve them.

Please be considerate of other moviegoers and avoid holding large groups of seats, particularly as showtime approaches.

Ticket prices vary depending on the showtime and available discounts. We offer reduced prices for seniors ages 62 and older, military guests, and our first showtime of the day. Every Tuesday, all tickets are just $8. Visit our Theatre Info page for current prices.

Yes! In addition to senior and military discounts, our Early Bird pricing applies to the first showtime of the day. And every Tuesday is $8 Tuesday, with $8 admission for everyone.

Yes! If you purchased tickets through our website, click the REFUND NOW button in your confirmation email at least one hour before showtime. You'll receive a full refund, including the service charge.

Tickets may also be refunded at our box office at least one hour before showtime. Tickets purchased through Fandango or ATOM Tickets must be refunded directly through those services.

For more details, please see our Refund Policy.

We don't offer ticket exchanges, but you can request a refund at least one hour before your scheduled showtime and then purchase tickets for another screening.

Seating & Your Visit

A designated accessible parking space is located in the rear parking lot.

We recommend arriving at least 20 minutes before your scheduled showtime, particularly on evenings and weekends. Theatre doors open 30 minutes before each screening. With just 29 seats per screening room, arriving early gives you the best selection of seats.

Yes. All guests must check in at the box office, even with advance tickets. We'll scan your digital ticket and provide a paper ticket for admission to the screening room.

Very! Both of our screening rooms feature plush, velvet-upholstered theatre seating. Our seats don't recline, but they're generously cushioned and designed for comfort. Soft throw blankets are available year-round.

No. We don't show commercial advertisements before our films. We typically play just two or three trailers, so the feature begins close to the advertised showtime. Don't be late!

Yes. All screenings at the Onyx Theatre are exclusively for guests ages 21 and older, regardless of a film's rating. Our beer and wine license requires us to operate as a 21+ venue. A valid photo ID is required for admission. For screenings without this age restriction, check out our Onyx Downtown programming at the Nevada Theatre.

Accessibility

Yes! The Onyx is fully wheelchair accessible, and both screening rooms offer wheelchair seating. If you'll be using a wheelchair, we encourage you to email us in advance at info@theonyxtheatre.com so we can have your space ready when you arrive. Advance notice is appreciated but never required, and our staff is always happy to assist when you get here.

Yes! We offer personal closed-captioning devices that fit into your seat's cupholder, as well as hearing assistance headphones. Just ask a staff member when you arrive, and we'll be happy to help you get set up.

Absolutely. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable at the Onyx. If you have accessibility questions or would like assistance when you arrive, please email info@theonyxtheatre.com in advance whenever possible. Our staff is also happy to help during your visit.

Food, Drinks & Theatre Policies

Yes! We offer a carefully curated selection of beer, wine, hard cider, and hard kombucha, along with coffee, tea, and a wide assortment of nonalcoholic beverages.

Our organic popcorn with real butter is a customer favorite, and our self-serve popcorn seasoning bar lets you make it your own. We also offer candy, gourmet chocolates, cookies, savory snacks, and other treats to enjoy during your film.

Outside food and beverages are not permitted, with one exception: we welcome reusable water bottles! You're welcome to bring your own water, but outside coffee, alcohol, meals, and snacks are not allowed.

Only trained service animals are permitted inside the theatre. Pets and emotional support animals are not allowed.

We want everyone to enjoy the film without distractions. Please keep conversations for before or after the movie, and keep phones silent and screens dark throughout the screening. If you need to use your phone, please step into the lobby. You can read our full Code of Conduct on our website.

Films & Programming

We curate a distinctive mix of independent cinema, international films, documentaries, and select major studio releases. Our programming reflects a passion for exceptional storytelling, from acclaimed festival favorites to films you might not find anywhere else in the area.

We consider critical response, audience interest, distributor availability, and the importance of bringing distinctive films to our community. We also listen to suggestions from our moviegoers. With only two screens, we can't show everything we'd like, but we're always looking for films worth sharing.

Our website has the latest movie listings, showtimes, trailers, and upcoming releases. You can also follow the Onyx on Facebook and Instagram for film announcements and special events.

Absolutely! We love hearing what our audiences want to see. While we can't guarantee we'll be able to book every suggested title, we're always interested in discovering films that matter to our community. You can send suggestions to info@theonyxtheatre.com.

Gift Cards & Private Screenings

Yes! Onyx gift cards are available in any amount starting at $10. They never expire and can be used toward movie tickets and concessions at our Argall Way theatre. Gift cards can be purchased online or at our box office. They're also rechargeable and can be used to purchase advance tickets online. Visit our Gift Cards page for more information.

Yes, if you're purchasing Onyx Downtown tickets in advance through our website. Onyx gift cards can be redeemed online for those tickets, but they cannot be used for purchases made in person at the Nevada Theatre, including tickets and concessions.

We occasionally accommodate private screenings and rentals, although availability is very limited. Because of our regular film schedule, private events are generally possible only during early-morning or late-night hours. For inquiries, please email info@theonyxtheatre.com with your preferred date, approximate group size, and any film requests. We'll let you know what may be possible.

Onyx Downtown

Onyx Downtown is our Sunday evening film series at the historic Nevada Theatre in downtown Nevada City. It's an opportunity to enjoy classic films, cult favorites, special screenings, and other cinema experiences in a beautiful historic venue.

Onyx Downtown screenings take place at the Nevada Theatre, 401 Broad Street, Nevada City, California, not at our regular Argall Way location. Sunday screenings typically begin at 7 PM, with doors opening at 6:30 PM.

No. Unlike our Argall Way location, Onyx Downtown screenings at the Nevada Theatre do not have a blanket 21+ age restriction. However, individual films may contain mature content, so we encourage guests to check the film's rating and description before attending.

Contacting the Onyx

The best way to reach us is by email at info@theonyxtheatre.com. Our small team is busy keeping the movies running, so we're unable to answer telephone calls during the day. We do our best to respond to emails, but replies may not be immediate.

For recorded showtimes, call (530) 265-8262.
